Nimbus Technologies

Re: Application for Graduate Engineer Trainee

Dear Hiring Manager,

I'm writing to apply for the Graduate Engineer Trainee position at Nimbus Technologies. I'm completing my B.Tech in Computer Science at Amity University with a CGPA of 8.6, and I'm keen to start my career on a team that builds products used by millions of people, as Nimbus does.

During my internship at Finlytics Solutions, I built six REST API endpoints in Python and Flask and wrote the tests for them. In college I built a campus marketplace app in React and Node.js that 600 students joined in its first month, and I led a team of four to the Smart India Hackathon finals. These projects taught me to ship, take feedback and fix things quickly.

I'd welcome the chance to learn from your engineers and contribute from the first week. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Aditya Sharma

How to write a fresher cover letter

  1. 01

Open with your degree and the role

Say what you're studying or just finished, and which role you want, in the first sentence.

  2. 02

Use a project as your experience

One project or internship described like a job, with what you built and who used it, is your strongest proof.

  3. 03

    Show you know the company

One line on why this company, not just any company. Recruiters for freshers read hundreds of identical letters.

  4. 04

    Avoid the clichés

Skip "hard-working, dedicated and passionate". Show those traits through what you've done.

The letter, paragraph by paragraph

Header, greeting and subject line

Start with your name, phone, email and LinkedIn or GitHub, the same header as your resume. Greet a person if you can find one on LinkedIn or the careers page; otherwise "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear Recruitment Team" is fine. When you send it by email, the subject line does the job of a header: the role, your name, and your degree and year.

Opening: degree, role and why this company

Aditya's first paragraph names the role, his degree, his college and his CGPA, then gives one reason for wanting Nimbus in particular. Recruiters screening freshers sort by role and qualification first, so those belong in the first sentence. The reason for the company should be something you could only say about them, like their product, their customers or their tech stack, not "a reputed organization".

Middle: projects and internships, described like work

With no full-time job, your projects are your experience. Aditya gives three, each with what he built, the tools he used and a number: six API endpoints, 600 students, a hackathon final. Choose the two or three closest to the job description. If the posting asks for Java, lead with your Java project even if your favorite is the Python one.

Closing: what you'll bring and a polite ask

Two sentences are enough. Say you'd like to learn and contribute, mention when you can join if it's relevant (for example, after your final exams in May), and thank them. Avoid begging phrases like "kindly give me a chance"; a calm, confident close reads better.

Length and format

Aim for 200 to 300 words in three or four short paragraphs. Use the same font and header as your resume and send it as a PDF. If the portal only gives you a text box, paste the letter as plain text without the header.

Fresher cover letter by experience level

No internship, projects only

I'm a final-year B.Sc. Computer Science student at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, applying for the Junior Developer role at Brightpath Software. For my final-year project I built an attendance app in Java and Firebase that three faculty members now use for 180 students, and I've solved more than 350 problems on LeetCode to sharpen my data structures. I'd like to join a team where I keep learning by shipping real features.

Commerce fresher (B.Com / BBA)

I recently completed my B.Com (Honours) at Delhi University with 78% and am applying for the Accounts Executive trainee role at Mehta & Rao Associates. During a two-month internship at a CA firm I reconciled bank statements for 12 small-business clients in Tally and helped prepare their GST returns, which gave me a practical start on the work your team does every month.

Fresher with a gap year

I graduated in 2025 with a B.Tech in Electronics from VIT and spent the past year preparing for GATE while completing the Google Data Analytics certificate. I'm now applying for the Data Analyst trainee role at Kaveri Insights, where I'd use the SQL and Tableau skills I practiced on three public datasets, including a sales dashboard linked in my resume.

Core engineering fresher

I'm a final-year B.E. Mechanical student at PSG College of Technology, applying for the Graduate Engineer Trainee role at Kovai Automation. My final-year project, a low-cost conveyor sorting rig built with a team of three, cut sorting time by 40% in our lab trials and showed me how design choices play out on the shop floor.

Mistakes to avoid in a fresher cover letter

  • Sending the same letter everywhere

Recruiters see "I am writing to express my interest in your reputed organization" every day. Change at least the company line and the project you lead with for each application.

  • Repeating the resume

Listing every course, certificate and skill turns the letter into a second resume. Pick one or two things and explain why they matter for this job.

  • Over-formal or pleading language

"I humbly request" and "kindly consider me" make you sound unsure. Write plain, confident sentences, the way you'd speak in a good interview.

  • Wrong names and careless errors

The wrong company name or role title is an instant rejection. Read the letter aloud and check both against the job posting before you send it.

Key takeaways

  • Open with your degree, the role and one real reason for this company.
  • Use a project or internship as your experience, with what you built and a number.
  • Keep it to 200–300 words in three or four paragraphs.
  • Change the opening and the example you lead with for every application.

Questions about fresher cover letters

How long should a fresher cover letter be?
Three short paragraphs, around 200-250 words. Recruiters spend under a minute on it.
What if I have no internship?
Use college projects, hackathons, freelance work or a leadership role in a club. Describe what you did and the result.
Should I mention my CGPA?
Yes, if it's strong (around 7.5/10 or higher). Otherwise focus on projects and skills.
Do I need a cover letter if the job portal doesn't ask for one?
On Naukri, LinkedIn Easy Apply or a campus portal it's usually optional, but a short note in the message box still helps you stand out. When you apply by email, put a short version of the letter in the email itself and attach your resume as a PDF.
What should the email subject line be?
Name the role and yourself so it's easy to find later: "Application for Graduate Engineer Trainee – Aditya Sharma, B.Tech CSE 2026". Use the job code too if the posting has one.
Can I use the same letter for campus placements and off-campus jobs?
Keep the structure, but rewrite the opening and the project you lead with for each company. Off-campus recruiters especially look for one sign that you chose them on purpose.
