Teacher resume examples and a sample teacher CV

A teacher resume has to show your subject and grade level first, because that is what principals look for, then evidence that students learn in your classroom. Results, classroom management and what you add to the school beyond teaching all count. The sample below is a UK teacher CV; the same structure works for a US teacher resume, with the changes in the questions below.

Why this resume works

  • Every bullet starts with a verb and ends with a result, most with a number.
  • The skills a teacher job post asks for appear in the Skills section and again inside the bullets.
  • A single, standard layout (Elegant) that applicant tracking systems read top to bottom.
  • Standard headings (Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills) so the ATS files each part correctly.

How to write a teacher resume

  1. 01

Lead with subject and grade level

"Secondary Science Teacher" or "Grade 3 Teacher" in your title. Principals sort applications by this before anything else.

  2. 02

    Show student outcomes

Test results, reading levels, attendance, progress data. Results prove your teaching works better than any description of it.

  3. 03

Include what you do beyond the classroom

Clubs, pastoral roles, curriculum work and mentoring show you'll contribute to the school, not just a timetable.

  4. 04

    Put your qualification up front

Teaching license, QTS, B.Ed or state certification, plus safeguarding training if relevant. Schools often can't interview without it.

Teacher resume, section by section

Header and title

Olivia's title, "Secondary Science Teacher", tells a head teacher her phase and subject before anything else. Add phone, email, city and LinkedIn if you use it.

Summary

Her summary gives her qualification, years, subjects (biology and chemistry), age range (11–18), how she teaches (practical lessons, data to close gaps), a result (GCSE pass rates up 14 points) and her leadership role (Head of Year 9). That covers subject, level, impact and the wider school in four lines.

Work experience

Her current role starts with her teaching load (6 classes, Year 7 to A level), then results with a method (GCSE pass rate from 68% to 82% through intervention groups), pastoral leadership with a number (180 students, 7 tutors, attendance up 3 points) and a club that reached national finals.

Earlier school

Her first post shows inclusion (mixed-ability classes including students with SEND), adaptability (moving lessons online during closures with 90% engagement) and mentoring trainee teachers. These are all things interview panels ask about.

Skills and tools

Teaching skills (planning, differentiation, assessment for learning, behavior, SEND support, pastoral care) and the systems schools use: Google Classroom, Teams, SIMS, Seneca. Naming the MIS you've used saves induction time.

Qualifications

PGCE and degree with institutions and years, and QTS under certifications. Schools check teaching status early, so make it easy to find.

Entry-level to senior teacher resume bullet points

Early career teacher (0–2 years)

  • Teach KS3 science to 5 classes and GCSE biology to 2, following the department's scheme of work.
  • Use weekly low-stakes quizzes to track progress; my Year 8 classes finished 6 points above the department average.
  • Adapt lessons and resources for 9 students with SEND in line with their support plans.
  • Run a lunchtime science club for Year 7 with 25 regular members.

Experienced teacher (3–7 years)

  • Teach A-level chemistry to 2 groups; 70% of students achieved A*–B last summer.
  • Rewrote the KS3 practical curriculum, adding 12 required practicals with shared resources.
  • Run Year 11 intervention for 30 students working at grade 3–4; 22 achieved grade 4 or above.
  • Coordinate the department's moderation of mock exams and coursework.

Head of department (8+ years)

  • Lead a science department of 9 teachers and 2 technicians across KS3, GCSE and A level.
  • Raised GCSE science results for disadvantaged students from 41% to 63% at grade 4+ in 3 years.
  • Manage the department budget and timetable, and observe every teacher each term with written feedback.
  • Led the department through an inspection that named science teaching as a strength.

Mistakes to avoid on a teacher resume

  • Duties instead of outcomes

"Planned and delivered engaging lessons" is the job description. Show results, progress, attendance or something you built for the department.

  • Student names or details

Even a first name or a specific story can identify a student. Describe groups and results only.

  • Too many acronyms

AfL, P8, PP and KS4 are clear to some readers but not to international or independent schools. Spell out anything that might not travel.

  • Unexplained gaps

Schools follow safer recruitment rules and will ask about any gap in your employment history. Add a short line for each gap, such as travel, study or caring for family.

Key takeaways

  • Lead with your subject, age range and qualification.
  • Show student outcomes as group figures, never individual details.
  • Include pastoral roles, clubs and mentoring.
  • Account for every gap in your employment history.

Questions about teacher resumes

Should a teacher resume be one or two pages?
One page for new teachers; two pages is common for experienced teachers with leadership roles, especially in the UK.
How do I show classroom management?
Describe a result: improved behavior points, attendance, or a calm routine others adopted. Specific outcomes say more than the phrase.
What should a new teacher put on a resume?
Your teaching placements (school, grade, subjects), your qualification, and any work with children, such as tutoring, coaching or camps.
How is a US teacher resume different from a UK teacher CV?
A US teacher resume names your state teaching certification and endorsements instead of QTS, uses grade levels (3rd grade, 9th grade) instead of year groups, and gives test results such as state assessments or AP pass rates instead of GCSEs. It is usually one page, on US Letter paper. The structure is the same.
What is a good sample resume for a teacher with no experience?
Lead with your certification or the date you expect it, then your student teaching placements: school, grade, subjects and one result each. Add tutoring, coaching, camps or classroom aide work, and a skills line with the tools you use, like Google Classroom.
Should I write a CV or fill in the school's application form?
Many UK state schools ask for their own application form and a supporting statement instead of a CV, so check the job pack. Keep an up-to-date CV for independent schools, international schools, agencies and any school that asks for one.
How do I show student results without sharing student data?
Use group figures: pass rates, progress scores, attendance and the size of the group. Never include names or details that could identify a student.
