Resume format for freshers

Updated · 8 min read · By the Last Minute Resume team

As a fresher, you are not competing with people who have five years of experience. You are competing with hundreds of other graduates from your year, often with the same degree and similar marks. The resume that wins is the one that shows, quickly and specifically, what you have already built, learned and done.

This guide gives you the exact format to use, what to put in each section when you have no full-time job yet, and a complete fresher resume you can copy. It is written with Indian campus and off-campus hiring in mind (“fresher” is the Indian word for a new graduate). Applying in the US, UK or elsewhere? The section order is the same, but drop school marks and the declaration, and see our guide to a resume with no experience and the internship resume example.

The best resume format for freshers

Use the reverse-chronological format with education first, on one page. Reverse-chronological means newest first within each section: your degree before your Class 12, your latest internship before an older one. It is the format recruiters and applicant tracking systems expect; the alternatives are compared in our resume format guide.

The order of sections for most freshers:

  1. Name and contact details
  2. Summary (or a short, specific objective)
  3. Education
  4. Internships and training
  5. Projects
  6. Skills
  7. Certifications
  8. Achievements and activities

Move a section up if it is your strongest. A computer science graduate with two solid internships can put Internships above Education. A commerce graduate who cleared CA Foundation should make sure that appears in the top half of the page.

For the layout, a simple resume template or ATS template is ideal: one column, clear headings, nothing that confuses the software used by large recruiters and campus hiring platforms.

Objective or summary? Write it like this

Most fresher resumes open with “To work in a reputed organization where I can utilize my skills and grow with the company.” Recruiters skip it because every other resume says the same thing. Whether you call it an objective or a summary matters less than making it specific: the role you want, your degree, two skills and one piece of proof.

Weak

Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organization to utilize my skills and knowledge.

Strong

B.Tech Computer Science graduate (2026, CGPA 8.1) applying for software developer roles. Built and deployed 3 full-stack projects in React and Node.js; 6-month backend internship at a Pune fintech startup.

B.Com fresher summary

B.Com graduate (2026, 78%) from Christ University, applying for accounts executive roles. Comfortable with Tally Prime, GST returns and advanced Excel; completed a 3-month articleship-style internship at a CA firm handling 40+ client ledgers.

Education: the format recruiters expect

Give each qualification its own line: degree and specialization, college, university (if different), city, year, and score. Newest first.

Education section

B.Tech, Electronics and Communication · VIT Vellore · 2022–2026 · CGPA 8.4/10 Class XII (CBSE) · Delhi Public School, Hyderabad · 2022 · 91.2% Class X (CBSE) · Delhi Public School, Hyderabad · 2020 · 94.6%

  • Many Indian employers, especially IT services companies and banks, have cut-offs for Class 10, Class 12 and graduation marks, so include all three as a fresher. Drop Class 10 and 12 once you have a year or two of work.
  • Write the score in the scale your institution uses (CGPA out of 10, percentage, or GPA out of 4) and say which.
  • Mention a relevant elective, thesis or final-year project title if it supports the job: “Final-year project: crop disease detection with CNNs”.
  • If you have backlogs that are now cleared, you don't need to list them. Answer honestly if a form asks.

No work experience? Use internships, projects and everything else

“No experience” rarely means nothing to show. Recruiters hiring freshers are looking for evidence that you can learn, finish things and work with people. All of these count:

  • Internships, paid or unpaid, including virtual ones. Treat each like a job: title, company, dates, two or three bullets with results.
  • Academic and personal projects. Give each a name, the tools used, and what it does or achieved. Link to GitHub or a live demo if you have one.
  • Part-time work: tuition, retail, delivery, family business. These show reliability and customer skills.
  • Leadership: placement coordinator, fest organizer, club secretary, NSS or NCC.
  • Competitions: hackathons, case competitions, coding contests, Olympiads, with your rank.

Weak

Did a project on a library management system.

Strong

Built a library management web app (Django, PostgreSQL) used by 300+ students in the department; cut book-issue time from 5 minutes to under 1 with barcode scanning.

If you have done an internship, our internship resume example shows how to write it up, and the bullet point generator turns a plain description into resume bullets.

Skills, certifications and activities

List hard skills you can be tested on in an interview, grouped: Programming (Python, Java, SQL), Tools (Excel, Tally, Figma, Git), and so on. Match the words in the job post. Don't rate yourself with stars or percentages; nobody knows what “Java 80%” means.

Certifications add weight when they are relevant and from a known source: NPTEL, Coursera or edX courses from universities, Google, AWS, Microsoft, NISM for finance roles, or a typing certificate for data entry. Two or three relevant ones beat a list of fifteen.

Languages are worth a line in India, especially for customer-facing jobs: “English (fluent), Hindi (fluent), Tamil (native)”. Hobbies are optional; keep them only if they say something real (“Run a 2,000-follower Instagram page on street food” suits a marketing role).

What to leave out of a fresher resume

  • The declaration (“I hereby declare that the information given above is true…”). It was a government-form habit; private employers don't need it.
  • Date of birth, father's name, marital status, religion, caste, full address. Nothing here helps you get hired.
  • A photo, unless the employer asks. It takes space better used for a project.
  • Generic soft skills like “hardworking, punctual, quick learner” with no evidence.
  • School-level activities once you have college ones, unless they are exceptional (national-level sport, Olympiad medals).

Before you send it, run it through our free ATS checker with a real job post. It shows which keywords from the posting are missing and whether the software can read your layout.

Many fresher applications also ask for a cover letter, especially for off-campus roles. Start from our fresher cover letter example and change the details.

Questions

What is the best resume format for freshers?
A one-page, reverse-chronological resume with education near the top, followed by internships, projects, skills and certifications. Use a single-column layout with standard headings so applicant tracking systems can read it.
Should freshers include 10th and 12th marks on a resume?
Yes, in India. Many employers screen freshers on Class 10, Class 12 and graduation scores. Once you have a year or two of work experience, you can remove the school marks.
Should a fresher write a career objective?
Write a short, specific summary or objective that names the role you want, your degree and one or two pieces of proof. Skip generic lines like 'to work in a reputed organization', which every recruiter has read thousands of times.
Is a declaration needed at the end of a resume?
No. The declaration is a leftover from government application forms. Private employers do not expect it, and leaving it out gives you space for something useful. Add it only if a government job notice asks for it.
Can a fresher resume be two pages?
Keep it to one page. Recruiters screening hundreds of fresher resumes rarely read a second page, and a single page forces you to keep only your strongest projects and achievements.
