Project Manager resume example

Project managers are judged on delivery: on time, on budget, and with the team and stakeholders still on side. Give the size of each project (budget, team, timeline) and how it ended.

Why this resume works

  • Every bullet starts with a verb and ends with a result, most with a number.
  • The skills a project manager job post asks for appear in the Skills section and again inside the bullets.
  • A single, standard layout (Corporate) that applicant tracking systems read top to bottom.
  • Standard headings (Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills) so the ATS files each part correctly.

How to write a project manager resume

  1. 01

    Give every project its size

Budget, team size and length tell a recruiter what level you work at. A $50,000 project and an $8M one need different managers.

  2. 02

    Say how it ended

On time, early, under budget, adopted by X users. Delivery is the job, so make the outcome the end of each bullet.

  3. 03

Put certifications in your title line

PMP, PRINCE2 or CSM next to your name. Many PM job posts list one as a requirement and ATS filter for it.

  4. 04

    Match the method

If the post is Agile, lead with Scrum and sprints; if it's construction or infrastructure, lead with schedules, budgets and vendors.

Project Manager resume, section by section

Header and title line

Michael writes "Project Manager, PMP" as his title, so the credential shows in the first second. Add phone, email, city and LinkedIn. If you hold PRINCE2 or a Scrum certification too, the title line can carry one more.

Summary

His summary covers the kind of projects (IT and infrastructure), the largest size ($8M), the methods (Agile and waterfall), team size (up to 25) and a track record (90% on time and on budget). Those five facts answer a hiring manager's first questions before they reach the experience section.

Work experience

Give each big project its size, the people involved and how it ended. "$8M patient records system across 12 hospitals, 3 weeks early and 4% under budget" is the model. Michael's "14 projects, 13 on schedule" is more believable than claiming every project went perfectly.

Skills

List delivery skills (planning, budgeting, risk, stakeholder and change management) and methods, then tools. Match the method to the job: a Scrum-heavy posting wants sprint delivery numbers, a construction or infrastructure posting wants stage gates and schedules.

Certifications

PMP and CSM go in their own section with the issuing body. These are checked, so use the exact name and only list what you hold.

Education and length

One line for the degree. With 7+ years, two pages are fine, but keep older roles short and give the space to the projects that match the job you want.

Entry-level to senior project manager resume bullet points

Project coordinator (0–3 years)

  • Kept the schedule, RAID log and meeting notes for a $1.2M office move across 3 floors.
  • Tracked 40 vendor deliverables and chased overdue items, holding the project to its go-live date.
  • Prepared weekly status reports for the sponsor and steering committee.
  • Arranged access, equipment and site inductions for 15 contractors.

Project manager (4–8 years)

  • Delivered a $2.5M ERP upgrade for 600 users on time, with 98% of users trained before cut-over.
  • Managed a team of 12 and 3 vendors, mixing waterfall planning with 2-week sprints.
  • Took over a data-center migration running 6 weeks late and brought it back on schedule in 2 months.
  • Kept change requests inside a 5% contingency with a change process agreed with the sponsor.

Program manager (10+ years)

  • Direct a $30M program of 9 projects across infrastructure, applications and security.
  • Lead 6 project managers and report monthly to the executive steering committee.
  • Set up a PMO with standard templates, stage gates and a portfolio dashboard.
  • Delivered the first release 2 months early by re-sequencing dependencies across 3 vendors.

Mistakes to avoid on a project manager resume

  • Tasks instead of outcomes

"Held weekly status meetings" and "managed stakeholders" are what every PM does. Show what you delivered, by when, and for how much.

  • Projects without sizes

A $50,000 website and an $8M hospital system are different jobs. Give each project its budget, team size, timeline and number of users or sites.

  • Taking credit for the team

"I built the platform" makes interviewers wonder what the engineers did. "Led the team of 25 that delivered the platform" is accurate and shows leadership.

  • Every method, no evidence

Listing Agile, Scrum, Kanban, SAFe, PRINCE2 and waterfall without showing where you used them reads like keyword stuffing. Name the methods you've actually run and give a result for each.

Key takeaways

  • Give every project a budget, a team size and a timeline.
  • Say how each project ended: on time, on budget, and what it changed.
  • Match the delivery method in the job post and prove you've used it.
  • Put PMP, PRINCE2 or CSM in your title line if you hold them.

Questions about project manager resumes

Should I list every project I managed?
No. Pick the 3-4 most relevant per role, with size and result. Summarize the rest in one line, like "managed 14 projects worth $6M".
Is PMP necessary for a project manager?
Not always, but it's the most requested PM certification and often a filter for senior roles. PRINCE2 is common in the UK, Europe and Australia.
How do I move into project management?
Highlight projects you already coordinated: schedules, budgets, people. Get CAPM or a Scrum certification, and use "project coordinator" roles as a step.
How long should a project manager resume be?
Two pages is normal once you have more than about seven years or many projects to show. Early in your career, keep it to one page with your two or three biggest projects.
How do I show a project that ran late or went over budget?
Leave it off unless you rescued it. If you did, say where it was when you took over and where it ended, like "brought a migration from 6 weeks late to on schedule". Interviewers often ask about a project that went wrong, so prepare that story either way.
PRINCE2 or PMP: which matters more?
It depends on the market. PRINCE2 often appears in UK and Australian government projects, and PMP in many private and global companies. List whichever you hold, and if you're choosing, check which comes up more in the postings you want.
