Financial Analyst resume example

Financial analyst resumes are read by people who live in numbers, so every bullet needs one. Show the models you built, the size of the budgets you worked on, and the decisions your analysis changed.

Why this resume works

  • Every bullet starts with a verb and ends with a result, most with a number.
  • The skills a financial analyst job post asks for appear in the Skills section and again inside the bullets.
  • A single, standard layout (Executive) that applicant tracking systems read top to bottom.
  • Standard headings (Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills) so the ATS files each part correctly.

How to write a financial analyst resume

  1. 01

    Size every number

The budget you managed, the deal value, the savings found. A financial analyst resume without dollar figures reads as junior.

  2. 02

    Separate FP&A and investment work

Corporate FP&A and investment analysis are hired differently. Lead with the kind the job post wants and use its words.

  3. 03

Show the decision your model drove

"Built a model" is the task. "Built a pricing model that led to a 4-point margin gain" is the result that gets interviews.

  4. 04

    List CFA progress

Passed levels or candidacy are widely recognized. Write "CFA Level II Candidate" with the year.

Financial Analyst resume, section by section

Header and title

Use the title the job uses: Financial Analyst, Senior Financial Analyst, or FP&A Analyst. If you're targeting FP&A, saying so in the title helps, because a hiring manager sorting resumes wants to see corporate finance, not investment banking, at a glance.

Summary

Ethan's summary covers his area (FP&A for technology companies), years, what he builds (three-statement models, forecasts, board reporting), his tools and his CFA progress. It ends with a skill finance teams value but rarely see proven: explaining numbers to people outside finance.

Work experience

Every bullet carries a size and, where possible, a decision. "Own the $140M operating budget for 6 departments" sets the scale; "brought forecast error from 9% to 3%" and "found $2.1M in vendor savings" show the work changed something. His earlier investment role reads differently on purpose: models for 15 opportunities and memos used in 4 deals.

Skills

Separate finance methods (modeling, forecasting, variance analysis, DCF) from tools. Everyone lists Excel, so name planning software like Adaptive Planning or Anaplan and any SQL or Power BI, since those are what move you ahead of other analysts.

Education and certifications

Degree, school and year on one line. Write CFA progress exactly: "CFA Level II candidate" or "Passed CFA Level I (2024)". Add your GPA only early in your career and only if it's strong.

Length and format

One page for under about seven years. Keep the number format consistent ($2.1M, $140M) and right-align dates. Finance readers notice inconsistent numbers the way editors notice typos.

Entry-level to senior financial analyst resume bullet points

Analyst (0–2 years)

  • Built monthly variance reports for 4 cost centers, explaining every line more than 5% off budget.
  • Update the 13-week cash forecast each Monday for the treasury team.
  • Replaced a 6-hour manual report with a SQL query and a 20-minute Excel refresh.
  • Supported the annual budget by collecting headcount plans from 9 department managers.

Senior analyst (3–5 years)

  • Own the revenue forecast for a $220M subscription business, updated monthly with sales and churn drivers.
  • Built the pricing model for a new enterprise tier that brought in $4M in its first year.
  • Partner with the VP of Engineering on a $38M budget and flagged a $1.5M cloud overspend 2 months early.
  • Rebuilt the board deck template, cutting preparation time from 5 days to 2.

FP&A manager (6+ years)

  • Lead 4 analysts covering budgeting, forecasting and business partnering for 3 business units.
  • Run annual planning for a $600M company, from top-down targets to approved department budgets.
  • Moved planning from spreadsheets to Anaplan, so a forecast refresh takes hours instead of a week.
  • Present the monthly forecast and key risks to the CFO and leadership team.

Mistakes to avoid on a financial analyst resume

  • Numbers with no size

"Built a forecast" and "built the forecast for a $140M budget" describe very different jobs. Give every piece of work its budget, revenue or deal value.

  • Model names without the decision

A list of DCF, LBO and comps shows what you know, not what you changed. Say what the model decided: a deal approved, a budget cut, a price set.

  • The wrong kind of finance up front

An FP&A manager reading about pitch books and deal sourcing may think you want a different job. Lead with the work that matches the posting and move the rest lower.

  • Overstating the CFA

"CFA" on its own means a charterholder, and the CFA Institute has rules on how candidates describe themselves. Write the level you're sitting or the levels you've passed.

Key takeaways

  • Give every number a size: budget, revenue, deal value or savings.
  • Show the decision your analysis changed, not only the model you built.
  • Lead with FP&A or investment work, whichever the job is.
  • Write CFA progress exactly, by level and year.

Questions about financial analyst resumes

What skills matter most for a financial analyst?
Advanced Excel and financial modeling first, then forecasting, variance analysis and clear presentation. SQL and a BI tool are increasingly asked for.
Should I put my GPA on a finance resume?
If you graduated in the last 2-3 years and it's 3.5 or higher, yes. Finance recruiters still look at it for early-career roles.
How long should a financial analyst resume be?
One page. Finance recruiters expect tight, scannable resumes, even with several years of experience.
How do I write a financial analyst resume with no experience?
Use a valuation or budgeting project from your degree, a stock-pitch competition or an internship, and describe it like work: the company you valued, the method, and the conclusion you reached. A model you can walk through in the interview is strong proof.
How do I show financial numbers that are confidential?
Use percentages, ranges or rounded figures your employer would be comfortable with, such as "a nine-figure budget" or "forecast error down from 9% to 3%". Never put non-public figures from a listed company on your resume.
Are financial modeling courses worth listing?
One line under certifications is fine if the course is relevant. They carry less weight than a model you built at work, so let your bullets do the convincing.
