Why this resume works

  • Every bullet starts with a verb and ends with a result, most with a number.
  • The skills a legal associate job post asks for appear in the Skills section and again inside the bullets.
  • A single, standard layout (Harvard) that applicant tracking systems read top to bottom.
  • Standard headings (Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills) so the ATS files each part correctly.

How to write a legal associate resume

  1. 01

Name your practice area and forums

Commercial litigation, arbitration, corporate, real estate or IP, and the courts or tribunals you appear before. Partners hire for a specific area, so make yours obvious.

  2. 02

    Describe matters without names

Give the type of dispute or deal, the value, the industry and your role. Client names and case details must stay confidential unless they're already public and your firm allows it.

  3. 03

    Show your drafting range

List the documents you draft yourself: plaints, written statements, applications, arbitration pleadings, contracts, notices. Drafting is the core skill partners test for.

  4. 04

    Say what you do independently

Appearing alone for hearings, handling a client call or running a document review shows you're trusted. It separates you from associates who only assist.

Legal Associate resume, section by section

Header and designation

"Legal Associate, Commercial Litigation" names both her role and her area. Phone, email, city and LinkedIn follow; the city matters because practice is tied to the courts where you appear.

Summary

Aditi's summary states her enrollment, years, practice area, the documents she drafts, the forums she appears before and the kinds of disputes she handles. A partner can see her fit in one read.

Work experience

Bullets give the matter load, a significant matter by value and outcome, independent appearances and research used by senior counsel. The earlier role shows contract drafting and case management, a common base for litigation associates.

Skills

Legal practice skills, then research databases. Naming SCC Online and Manupatra matters less than the drafting skills, but it shows you can work without training.

Enrollment and AIBE

Her Bar Council enrollment and AIBE result sit in their own section with years, because firms need to know you can appear in court.

Education

LL.B. and the earlier degree, with institutions and years. For five-year law graduates, one line with the BA LL.B. or BBA LL.B. is enough; add rank or honors if they stand out.

Entry-level to senior legal associate resume bullet points

Junior associate (0–2 years)

  • Drafted first versions of plaints, replies and applications for partner review in 25 matters.
  • Ran legal research on SCC Online and Manupatra for a team of 4, with notes ready in a day.
  • Attended 10 to 15 hearings a month, taking notes and updating clients on next dates.
  • Organized case files, indexes and paper books for High Court filings.

Associate (2–5 years)

  • Handle 30 active matters, drafting pleadings and submissions largely on my own.
  • Appear independently for interim hearings and arguments on procedural applications.
  • Brief senior counsel and prepare the written submissions for final hearings.
  • Manage day-to-day client contact for 6 corporate clients on their disputes.

Senior associate (6+ years)

  • Lead a team of 3 associates on a portfolio of 40 commercial disputes and arbitrations.
  • Argue applications and appeals before the High Court and arbitral tribunals.
  • Advise in-house legal teams on dispute strategy, settlement and risk.
  • Review every pleading and opinion from the team before it goes to the client.

Mistakes to avoid on a legal associate resume

  • Client or party names

Naming clients or describing a confidential matter in detail is a serious breach. Describe matters by type, value and industry.

  • Only listing areas of law

"Exposure to civil, criminal, corporate and family law" is too broad to be useful. Focus on the area you practice and give concrete matters.

  • Hiding independent work

If you appear alone or draft without heavy edits, say so. It's the clearest signal of your level.

  • Typos in a drafting role

A legal resume with a spelling or grammar slip undercuts a lawyer whose job is precise language. Proofread it as carefully as a pleading.

Key takeaways

  • Name your practice area and the forums you appear before.
  • Describe matters by type, value and your role, never by party.
  • List the documents you draft yourself.
  • Show what you handle independently.

Questions about legal associate resumes

Should I list internships after I start practicing?
Keep them for the first year or two, in a short section with the chamber or firm and the work done. Once you have solid associate experience, cut them to one line or remove them.
Can I mention reported cases I worked on?
If the judgment is public and your firm allows it, you can cite it with your role. Otherwise describe the matter by type and value without naming parties.
How do I show moot courts and publications?
List them in a short section for the first few years: moot court rounds with results, and articles with the journal and year. They show research and advocacy skills when work experience is still thin.
Should a legal associate resume be one page?
One page is ideal for associates with up to about 5 years. Senior associates with many notable matters can use two, keeping the first page to practice area, roles and key matters.
Litigation or corporate: can one resume cover both?
It's better to write two versions. Litigation roles look for drafting pleadings and court work; corporate roles look for transactions, contracts and due diligence. Lead with the side the firm is hiring for.
