What a resume summary is (and isn't)
Also called a professional summary, career summary, resume profile or, in the UK, a personal profile, the summary sits between your contact details and your work experience. Its job is to make the recruiter want to read on.
| A resume summary is | A resume summary isn't |
|---|---|
| 2–4 lines, about 40–70 words | A paragraph of 7+ lines |
| Written for the job you're applying to | The same text sent to every employer |
| About what you offer, with proof | About what you want from the job |
| Written without “I” | A list of adjectives like “dynamic” and “passionate” |
Use one if you have at least some relevant experience, or if you are changing careers and need to explain the move. Students with no work history can use a short summary built around their degree and projects, as in the examples below.
The four-part formula
A good summary answers four questions, in roughly this order:
- Who are you professionally? Your job title, or the title you are applying for.
- How much experience? Years, or for students and new grads, your degree and year.
- What are you good at? Two or three skills from the job post.
- What's your proof? One result, with a number if you have one.
Weak
Experienced professional with excellent communication skills and a passion for success, looking for a challenging role.
Strong
Customer success manager with 5 years in B2B SaaS, managing 60+ mid-market accounts. Cut churn from 14% to 8% in a year by rebuilding onboarding and quarterly business reviews.
Keep it to two to four lines (about 40–70 words). Write without “I”, and don't repeat what is already obvious from your job titles. If you write it last, after your experience section, you will know which result is your strongest.
Resume summary examples for students and new graduates
Without years of experience, lead with your degree, what you have built or done, and the role you want. Specific beats impressive: a real project with real users is worth more than “excellent analytical skills”.

CV summary examples (UK)
On a UK CV the summary is usually headed “Profile” or “Personal profile” and can run a line longer than a US summary. The formula is the same; the spelling and terms are British.

Mistakes that make recruiters skip your summary
- Buzzwords with no proof: “results-driven”, “dynamic”, “team player”, “go-getter”. Every resume says them, so they say nothing.
- Talking about what you want: “seeking a role where I can grow”. The employer cares what you bring.
- Being too long. A seven-line paragraph won't get read. Cut to the strongest three lines.
- Using the same summary for every job. Change at least the job title and the skills to match the posting.
- Claims you can't back up. If the summary says “expert in Python”, the interviewer will test it.
Stuck? The free resume summary generator asks for your job title, experience and top skills and writes three summaries, leaving [brackets] where your own numbers go.
Summary, objective or profile?
| Heading | What it is | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Summary | What you offer: experience, skills, a result | Almost everyone |
| Objective | What you want: the role you are aiming for | Only as part of a summary, for new grads or career changers |
| Profile / Personal statement | Same as a summary, UK wording | UK and European CVs |
Whichever word you use, write it as a summary of what you offer. Once your summary is done, check the rest of your resume against the job post with the free ATS checker.
