What a resume headline is
The headline sits directly below your name, usually in bold or a slightly larger size than body text. It replaces the bare job title many people put there with something more useful: your role plus the one or two things that set you apart.
| Headline | Summary | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | One line, about 6–15 words | Two to four lines, 40–70 words |
| Format | A phrase, no full stop | Full sentences without “I” |
| Job | Tell the reader what you are | Prove it with experience and a result |
| Needed? | Optional, but cheap and useful | Recommended for almost everyone |
You can use both: a headline under your name, then a summary below it. Our resume summary examples guide covers the second part. New grads who prefer an objective can pair a headline with one of our resume objective examples.
A formula that works
Most good headlines are built from three pieces, separated by a vertical bar, a comma or the word “with”:
- Your job title, matching the title in the job post where it honestly fits.
- Your level or years: Recent Graduate, 3+ years, Senior, Lead.
- Your strongest specific: a specialism, a key tool, a license, or a result.
Weak
Hardworking professional seeking new opportunities
Strong
Senior Accountant, CPA | 7 Years in Audit, Tax and NetSuite
The weak version contains no job title, no field and no searchable words. The strong one tells the reader the role, the seniority and three skills a hiring manager for that job will look for, in ten words.
Write your headline in title case or sentence case, but be consistent. Skip the full stop at the end; it is a label, not a sentence.
Resume headline examples for students and recent graduates
A new graduate's headline leans on your degree, your target role and the skill or project that best supports it. In India, “Fresher” is a normal word to include, because recruiters there filter for it; elsewhere, write “Recent Graduate” or “Entry-Level”.
- Computer Science Graduate | Java, Spring Boot and SQL | 2 Full-Stack Projects
- Recent Graduate Seeking Junior Developer Role | React, Node.js
- Accounting Graduate | CPA Track | QuickBooks and Advanced Excel
- MBA Marketing Graduate | Digital Campaigns and Market Research Internship
- HR Graduate with Talent Acquisition Internship at a Staffing Firm
- Mechanical Engineering Graduate, EIT | SolidWorks, AutoCAD | Plant Internship
- Entry-Level QA Tester | Manual and Automation Testing | ISTQB Certified
- New Grad RN, BSN | ICU and Med-Surg Clinical Rotations
- Hospitality Management Graduate | Front Office and F&B Service Training
- B.Com Fresher | Tally Prime, GST Filing and Advanced Excel (India)

LinkedIn and Naukri headlines
On LinkedIn, the headline under your name (up to 220 characters) shows in every search result and comment, so it does the same job as a resume headline with more room. On Naukri, India's largest job site, “Resume Headline” is a separate profile field that shows in recruiter search results next to your name. Either way it works like a shop sign: it decides whether anyone clicks.
Both fields allow more room than a document headline, so you can write a full phrase. Use it to pack in the words recruiters type when they search:
Senior Backend Engineer | Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, AWS | Building payment APIs for 2M users | Open to remote roles
Java Backend Developer with 5 years in Spring Boot, Microservices, Kafka and AWS, building payment APIs for a fintech serving 2 million users. Immediate joiner, Bengaluru.
B.Com 2026 fresher skilled in Tally Prime, GST returns, TDS and advanced Excel, with a 4-month internship at a CA firm. Looking for accounts executive roles in Hyderabad.
On Naukri, mention your notice period or “immediate joiner” if it is short; recruiters in India filter on it. Update either field whenever your skills or target role change, and reread it each time you start a new job search; a headline written three years ago describes someone you no longer are.
Mistakes that make a headline invisible
- No job title. “Passionate problem-solver” could be anyone. Recruiters search and scan for titles.
- Buzzwords instead of skills. “Results-driven, dynamic go-getter” uses ten words to say nothing. Swap them for a tool, a license or a number.
- A different title from the job post. If you are a “Member of Technical Staff” applying for “Software Engineer”, use the common title (it is the same job) and keep your official title in the experience section.
- Cramming. Eight skills separated by bars is a keyword list, not a headline. Two or three specifics is the limit.
- Overclaiming. “Expert” and “Guru” invite the hardest interview questions. Let the years and results do the talking.
- Leaving it the same for every job. Change the specialism to match each posting; it takes thirty seconds.
Check that your headline's keywords also appear in your experience section. An applicant tracking system reads the whole page, and a recruiter who sees “Kubernetes” in the headline will look for it in your bullets. The free ATS checker shows which keywords from a job post your resume covers.
Resume headline vs LinkedIn headline
LinkedIn's headline does the same job with more room (up to 220 characters) and a bigger audience: it appears next to your name in search results, comments and connection requests. Most people can reuse their resume headline as the start of it, then add a specialism or the kind of work they want.
The free LinkedIn headline generator writes five versions from your role and skills. Keep your resume, LinkedIn and any job-site headlines consistent: a recruiter who checks all three should see the same person.
Choosing a layout? Headlines show up best on single-column designs like our ATS resume templates, where the line sits right under your name with nothing competing for attention.
