Why this resume works

  • Every bullet starts with a verb and ends with a result, most with a number.
  • The skills an assistant professor job post asks for appear in the Skills section and again inside the bullets.
  • A single, standard layout (Scholar CV) that applicant tracking systems read top to bottom.
  • Standard headings (Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills) so the ATS files each part correctly.

How to write an assistant professor resume

  1. 01

    Lead with qualifications

PhD, NET or SET, and your master's degree are checked first for eligibility. Put them where a committee sees them in seconds.

  2. 02

    Count and classify your publications

Give totals and indexing: Scopus, SCI or UGC-CARE. Add a Google Scholar link and list your best few papers in full.

  3. 03

    Show teaching with evidence

Courses taught, student numbers, feedback scores, labs set up and projects guided. Committees score teaching, so make it measurable.

  4. 04

    Include service and administration

Accreditation work, committees, faculty development programs and events you organized count toward selection and promotion.

Assistant Professor resume, section by section

Header

Gayathri puts her PhD after her name and her department in the title. Add a Google Scholar or ORCID link if you have one; committees often check it for citations and recent work.

Summary

It gives her years of teaching, PhD area, courses taught, feedback, publication count with indexing, a funded project and PhD scholars guided. That maps to how most selection committees score candidates.

Experience

Bullets cover teaching (courses, students, feedback), research (a funded project), supervision (PhD and undergraduate) and service (accreditation). The earlier post shows a lab she set up and a faculty program she ran.

Education

Academic CVs often list education near the top. Hers includes the PhD thesis topic, which tells a committee her research area at a glance.

Publications

A short extra section lists two recent papers with their indexing and her role, then the totals, pointing to Google Scholar for the full list. A full CV for an application can list every paper.

Skills and certifications

Teaching and research skills sit in separate groups. UGC NET and an NPTEL certificate are listed with years, as eligibility and faculty development items.

Assistant professor (4–8 years)

  • Teach postgraduate electives and design new courses for the updated curriculum.

  • Guide PhD scholars and serve on doctoral committees.
  • Coordinate accreditation documents and audits for the department.

Associate professor / head of department (9+ years)

  • Set up an industry-supported center of excellence with 2 company partners.

Mistakes to avoid on an assistant professor resume

  • Publications without indexing

A count of papers means little without where they were published. Mark Scopus, SCI or UGC-CARE indexing for each one.

  • Teaching with no evidence

"Passionate teacher" doesn't score points. Give courses, student numbers, feedback and results.

  • Leaving out service

Committee work, accreditation, events and outreach count in academic selection. Give them a short section.

  • Inconsistent formatting

Mixed citation styles and dates suggest carelessness to academic readers. Use one style throughout.

Key takeaways

  • Put your PhD, NET or SET status up front.
  • Count publications by type and indexing, with a Scholar link.
  • Show teaching with courses, students and feedback.
  • Include research funding, supervision and service.

Questions about assistant professor resumes

Academic CV or resume: which do I need?
For assistant professor posts, an academic CV is usual. It can run to several pages and include full publication lists, conferences, grants and service. Some colleges ask for a short resume plus a separate publication list; follow the advertisement.
Do I need NET or a PhD to apply?
Eligibility depends on the regulator, the subject and the institution, and rules change over time. Check the current notification and the advertisement for the post, and state your NET, SET or PhD status clearly on your CV.
How should I list my publications?
Use a consistent citation style, newest first, and mark the indexing for each journal. Group them into journals, conferences and book chapters. Leave out predatory or unindexed journals if you can.
Should I include my API score?
Some institutions ask for an academic performance score or a points table in the application form. You can include a summary if the advertisement asks for it; otherwise keep it for the form.
How do I show teaching quality?
Give average student feedback, results in your courses, labs or courses you designed, and teaching awards. Specific numbers are stronger than "excellent teaching skills".
