Why this resume works

  • Every bullet starts with a verb and ends with a result, most with a number.
  • The skills an electrical engineer job post asks for appear in the Skills section and again inside the bullets.
  • A single, standard layout (Copper) that applicant tracking systems read top to bottom.
  • Standard headings (Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills) so the ATS files each part correctly.

How to write an electrical engineer resume

  1. 01

    Give voltage levels and load

"25 kV and 4.16 kV substations, 6 MVA load" tells a hiring manager the scale you're trusted with. Add the main equipment you handle.

  2. 02

    Measure uptime and energy

Breakdown hours, MTBF, power factor and energy cost are the numbers plant heads care about. Turn savings into dollars.

  3. 03

    List licenses and approvals

Your P.Eng. or EIT status, an energy manager credential and arc flash training carry real weight. In India, the electrical supervisor license, BEE energy auditor certificate and CEIG approvals play the same role.

  4. 04

    Separate maintenance, projects and design

These are different career tracks. Lead with the one the job asks for and keep the others as support.

Electrical Engineer resume, section by section

Header

Name, "Electrical Engineer", phone, email, city and LinkedIn. If your work is specifically in maintenance, projects or design, you can add it to the title, like "Electrical Engineer, Maintenance".

Summary

Meera's summary gives her years, her side of the work (plant maintenance and projects), the industries (automotive and process), the voltage levels (25 kV and 4.16 kV) and equipment (low-voltage panels, drives, PLCs), and her results theme: lower energy bills and fewer breakdowns. It ends with approvals and audits, which plant heads care about.

Work experience

Her foundry role starts with scale (6 MVA load, 2 substations, 4 induction furnaces, 120 motors), then gives three results with methods: breakdown hours down 46% with thermography and preventive maintenance, power factor from 0.89 to 0.99 saving C$85,000 a year, and a 1.2 MWp solar plant that supplies 18% of energy.

Projects experience

Her first role shows project work: installing and testing medium- and low-voltage panels, transformers and cabling, single line diagrams approved first time, and load flow studies in ETAP. First-time approvals are a quiet but strong signal of careful work.

Skills and standards

Electrical skills (switchgear, substations, transformers, VFDs, PLCs, power factor correction, protection) and software and standards (AutoCAD Electrical, ETAP, SCADA, the Canadian Electrical Code, CSA Z462). Naming the PLC brands you've worked on helps match maintenance roles.

Licenses and certifications

Meera lists her P.Eng. and her Certified Energy Manager credential. Licenses decide what you're allowed to sign off, so put them where a reader can find them.

Entry-level to senior electrical engineer resume bullet points

Graduate / junior engineer (0–2 years)

  • Carried out preventive maintenance on 60 LT motors and 12 MCC panels to a monthly schedule.
  • Logged every breakdown in SAP PM with its cause and repair time.
  • Took part in transformer oil and protection relay testing during the annual shutdown.
  • Drew panel modifications and lighting layouts in AutoCAD Electrical.

Electrical engineer (3–6 years)

  • Maintain a 25/4.16 kV substation, 4 transformers and 40 VFDs at a chemical plant running 24x7.
  • Replaced 1,200 conventional fittings with LED lighting, saving 310,000 kWh a year.
  • Fault-find Siemens S7 PLCs on 3 packing lines; average repair time fell from 2 hours to 40 minutes.
  • Led the internal electrical safety audit and closed 46 observations before the statutory inspection.

Electrical maintenance head (8+ years)

  • Head electrical maintenance for 3 plants with 18 engineers and technicians.
  • Planned a 69 kV substation upgrade for a 15 MVA expansion with no unplanned outage.
  • Run the energy management program; specific energy use fell 11% in 2 years.
  • Own a C$2 million electrical budget and the maintenance contracts for HT equipment.

Mistakes to avoid on an electrical engineer resume

  • Generic maintenance lines

"Maintained electrical equipment" fits every electrical job. Say which equipment, at which voltage, and what changed: breakdown hours, uptime or repair time.

  • Leaving out safety

Electrical work is high-risk. Permits, lock-out/tag-out, earthing checks, audits and an incident-free record deserve at least one bullet.

  • Energy savings in percent only

"Saved 12% energy" is clearer with kWh and dollars: kWh a year and the money saved on the bill.

  • Licenses buried at the bottom

A P.Eng., PE, chartered status or electrical supervisor license decides what you can sign for. Mention it in your summary too, not only in the last section.

Key takeaways

  • Give voltage levels, load and the equipment you're responsible for.
  • Measure breakdowns, uptime and energy in kWh and money.
  • List licenses, approvals and the standards you work to.
  • Say whether your work is maintenance, projects or design.

Questions about electrical engineer resumes

Should I include PLC and automation skills on an electrical resume?
Yes. Most plant roles expect basic PLC, VFD and SCADA work. Name the brands (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Schneider) you've used.
Is a P.Eng. or PE license important?
For design and sign-off roles, yes. In Canada you need a P.Eng. to stamp drawings, and in the US a PE license; in India, many states require a licensed electrical supervisor on site. It can decide who gets hired.
How do I move from maintenance to a design role?
Highlight drawings, load calculations, ETAP studies and approvals you've done. A short course in electrical design and a few sample drawings help too.
How do I write an electrical engineer resume as a new graduate?
Lead with your degree and any co-op or internship at a substation, plant or panel builder. Add your final-year project with a result, the tools you know (AutoCAD Electrical, basic PLC, ETAP), and your EIT status if you have it.
Should I mention solar or EV charging experience?
Yes, if you've worked on a real installation. Give the size (kWp or number of chargers), your part in it and the result, such as the share of energy it supplies. It's increasingly part of plant and building electrical work.
