Re: Application for Senior Graphic Designer

Dear Ms. Olivia Tran,

I'm applying for the Senior Graphic Designer role at Fernway Grocers. I shop at your Queen Street store, and your hand-lettered weekly specials boards are the best thing in it. Bringing that warmth into your packaging and flyers, which your job post says are being redesigned this year, is a brief I'd love to work on.

At Maple & Oak Foods I lead design for a range of 60 packaged products sold in about 900 stores. Last year I redesigned our granola line around one bold color per flavor and a much larger product photo, after store visits showed shoppers couldn't tell flavors apart from two meters away. Sales of the line grew 18% in the six months after the new packs reached shelves, and the system now guides every new product we launch. I also produce our weekly flyers and in-store signage on tight retail deadlines, working in Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop, and preparing print-ready files that come back from the printer right the first time.

You can see the granola project and others at emmacollins.design. Thank you for considering my application; I'd be glad to walk you through my process.

Kind regards,

Emma Collins

How to write a graphic designer cover letter

  1. 01

    Link the portfolio early

Put the link in the header and again in the last line. A hiring manager who can't find your work in five seconds moves on.

  2. 02

Explain the brief and the result

What problem the design solved and what happened after: sales, sign-ups, fewer printing errors, a faster launch. Results turn a nice-looking project into a business case.

  3. 03

Show you know their visual world

Mention something specific about their brand, packaging or campaigns. It proves you've looked, and hints at what you'd do.

  4. 04

    Keep the letter's design simple

A clean, readable letter shows taste. Save the bold layouts for your portfolio, where they won't confuse an applicant tracking system.

The letter, paragraph by paragraph

Opening: an honest compliment with detail

Emma mentions a specific thing she likes about Fernway, the hand-lettered specials boards in a particular store, and links it to the redesign in the job post. A precise detail sounds genuine; a general compliment sounds copied.

Middle: one project with a reason and a result

The granola redesign has a clear brief (shoppers couldn't tell flavors apart from two meters away), a design answer (one bold color per flavor, larger photos) and a business result (18% growth in six months). This is how a designer shows strategic thinking.

The system, not just the pack

"The system now guides every new product we launch" shows the work had lasting value. Senior roles are about building visual systems, not one-off pieces.

Production skills

Weekly flyers, tight retail deadlines and print-ready files that come back right the first time. Production reliability matters to in-house teams, and many designers forget to mention it.

Close: the portfolio link

The letter ends by pointing to the portfolio, naming the project the reader has just read about. That makes clicking the link the obvious next step.

Graphic Designer cover letter by experience level

Junior designer / new graduate

I've just finished my diploma in Graphic Design and I'm applying for the Junior Designer role at Brightside Studio. My final project, a rebrand for a neighborhood bakery, included a logo, menu boards and Instagram templates; the owner now uses all of them, and her weekend orders went up after the new menus went in.

Graphic designer in India

I'm applying for the Graphic Designer role at Tanvi Ethnic Wear. At a Jaipur design agency I've spent three years designing social media creatives and festive campaigns for fashion and jewelry brands, and my Diwali campaign for a client's Instagram doubled their usual engagement and sold out two featured collections.

Freelancer moving in-house

For four years I've freelanced for small food and wellness brands, handling everything from logos to packaging. I'm applying for the In-house Designer role at Greenleaf Pantry because I'd like to build one brand deeply, and I already work like an in-house designer for my two longest-standing clients.

Senior / lead designer

I'm applying for the Design Lead role at Copperline Coffee. I lead a team of three designers producing packaging, retail and digital work for 120 cafés, and last year we built a brand toolkit that cut the time to launch a seasonal campaign from six weeks to three.

Mistakes to avoid in a graphic designer cover letter

  • No portfolio link, or a broken one

Check the link in a private browser window before you send. A portfolio that asks for a login or a dead link loses the application.

  • Describing style instead of results

"I create clean, modern designs" says nothing. Explain the problem you solved and what changed.

  • An over-designed letter

Icons, columns and graphics can make the letter hard to read and unreadable to software. Let the portfolio show your visual skills.

  • Sending the same portfolio to everyone

If the job is packaging, lead with packaging. Reorder your portfolio and pick letter examples for each application.

Key takeaways

  • Link your portfolio in the header and the last line.
  • Describe one project's brief, design choice and result.
  • Mention something specific about their brand.
  • Keep the letter's design clean and simple.

Questions about graphic designer cover letters

Should a graphic designer's cover letter be designed?
Lightly. Use the same header and fonts as your resume, maybe one brand color. A heavily designed letter can break in applicant tracking systems and distract from what you say.
How many projects should I mention?
One in detail and maybe one more in a sentence. Choose the projects closest to the job, and make sure both are in your portfolio.
What if my projects don't have measurable results?
Describe the before and after, or the feedback: a client who reordered, a campaign that was extended, a design adopted across a brand. Results don't always have to be percentages.
How do I write a graphic designer cover letter with no experience?
Use college briefs, freelance work, a society's posters or a redesign you did for practice, and say clearly which ones were self-initiated. Show your thinking: what the brief was and why you made the choices you did.
Should I mention the software I use?
Yes, briefly, especially if the job post names it: Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Figma or After Effects. Mention it inside a sentence about a project.
How long should it be?
Around 250 words. Your portfolio does the heavy lifting; the letter just needs to make the reader want to open it.
