Chartered Accountant resume example

A chartered accountant resume is judged on the kind of audits and filings you've handled, the size of the clients, and how you qualified. Say whether you're from audit, tax or industry, name the standards (Ind AS, Companies Act, GST), and put your articleship to work as real experience.

Why this resume works

  • Every bullet starts with a verb and ends with a result, most with a number.
  • The skills a chartered accountant job post asks for appear in the Skills section and again inside the bullets.
  • A single, standard layout (Harvard) that applicant tracking systems read top to bottom.
  • Standard headings (Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills) so the ATS files each part correctly.

How to write a chartered accountant resume

  1. 01

    Treat articleship as real experience

Three years of articleship is work. Give it its own entry with bullets on audits, returns and clients, especially if you're newly qualified.

  2. 02

Say how big the clients were

Turnover, listed or unlisted, industry. "Audits of companies up to ₹1,800 crore" places you far better than "audit of various clients".

  3. 03

Pick your side: practice or industry

Audit firms want audit depth; companies want close, reporting and tax. Reorder your bullets for each, and lead with SAP or ERP for industry roles.

  4. 04

Put the first attempt where it shows

If you cleared in the first attempt or have an all-India rank, say so under education. It is one of the first things recruiters look for.

Chartered Accountant resume, section by section

Header

Your name, "Chartered Accountant" as the title, phone, email, city and LinkedIn. Some CAs write "CA Rohan Agarwal"; either is fine, as long as it matches your LinkedIn.

Summary

Rohan's summary gives his qualification year, his post-qualification and articleship experience separately, his side (statutory audit), the size of his clients (up to ₹1,800 crore, including listed companies), the standards he works with and his secondary skills. Splitting post-qualification from articleship is honest and is what recruiters look for.

Post-qualification experience

Show how many engagements you lead, the client turnover range, listed status and team size, then the technical work that changed something: Rohan's Ind AS 115 and 116 review moved reported numbers by ₹38 crore, and his controls testing led to 23 fixes. Meeting the AGM deadline two years running shows he delivers under pressure.

Articleship

Three years of articleship is real work, so describe it like a job: 35 tax audit reports, 120+ returns, GST filing for 18 clients with ₹26 lakh of missed input credit recovered, plus stock and internal audits. Big Four and mid-tier interviewers often ask about it in detail.

Education and skills

List CA Final with the year and your attempt record if it's good, then your B.Com and any ICAI certificates like DISA. In skills, name the standards and laws you've applied (Ind AS, Companies Act 2013, CARO 2020, GST, TDS) and your tools.

Length and format

One page for newly qualified CAs, two once you have several years after qualifying. Keep client descriptions to sector and size so you never breach confidentiality.

Entry-level to senior chartered accountant resume bullet points

Newly qualified CA (0–1 year)

  • Ran audit fieldwork for 6 clients with turnover up to ₹400 crore, covering revenue, inventory and payables.
  • Prepared CARO 2020 reporting and draft audit reports for 4 private limited companies.
  • Reviewed TDS compliance for 12 clients and found ₹9 lakh of short deductions before filing.
  • Built Excel tools for sampling and aging analysis that the audit team now reuses.

Industry CA (2–5 years)

  • Prepare monthly and quarterly Ind AS financial statements for a ₹2,400 crore manufacturer.
  • Closed the books in 5 working days instead of 9 by standardizing provisions and intercompany entries in SAP.
  • Coordinate statutory and tax audits, answering 250+ auditor queries a year.
  • Manage GST compliance for 7 state registrations, including annual returns and reconciliation with the books.

Finance controller (8+ years)

  • Lead a 12-person team covering reporting, tax, treasury and compliance for 3 group companies.
  • Led the move to Ind AS with no qualification in the audit report.
  • Freed up ₹4.5 crore of working capital by cutting debtor days from 78 to 54.
  • Present quarterly results to the audit committee and the board.

Mistakes to avoid on a chartered accountant resume

  • Treating articleship as training

Three years of articleship is work experience. A single line saying "completed articleship" wastes your most detailed proof of what you can do.

  • Audits with no client size

"Conducted statutory audits" could mean small partnerships or listed companies. Give turnover, sector and whether the client was listed.

  • Naming clients

Unless the engagement is public, don't name audit or tax clients. Describe them by sector and size; interviewers expect that discretion from a CA.

  • A syllabus instead of skills

A long list of Acts and sections reads like an exam paper. Name the standards you've applied and say what you did with them.

Key takeaways

  • Describe articleship as real work, with numbers.
  • Give each audit's client size, sector and listed status.
  • Name the standards and laws you've applied, not every one you studied.
  • Put first-attempt passes or ranks where they're easy to see.

Questions about chartered accountant resumes

Should I mention how many attempts I took to clear CA?
You don't have to. Mention it when it helps (first attempt, rank). If it took longer, list the qualification year and let your experience speak.
Is a CA resume one page or two?
One page for newly qualified CAs; two pages once you have several years and a mix of audit, tax and industry roles.
Do Big Four firms care about my articleship firm?
They care more about what you did there. Name the types of audits, sizes of clients and standards you worked on, and the firm name matters less.
Should I mention my CA rank?
Yes. An All India Rank is rare and belongs in your summary and your education line, where a recruiter will see it in the first few seconds.
How do I move from audit to an industry finance role?
Lead with the work industry finance teams also do: preparing financial statements, Ind AS adjustments, GST and TDS, and internal controls. Write it from the preparer's side ("reviewed lease workings that changed reported liabilities by ₹38 crore") rather than only as testing someone else's numbers.
Do I need to write my ICAI membership number?
No. "Member, ICAI" with the year you qualified is enough. Employers verify membership separately.
