Re: Application for Senior Accountant

Dear Mr. David Lindqvist,

I'm applying for the Senior Accountant role at Halvorsen Foods. Your posting says the finance team is moving its close onto NetSuite and getting ready for its first audit as a larger company. I've spent the last three years doing exactly that for a manufacturer of a similar size, and I'd like to do it again with you.

At Lakeshore Manufacturing I own the general ledger for a $90 million business. When I joined, month-end took ten working days. I moved our recurring accruals and bank reconciliations into NetSuite and wrote a close checklist the whole team now works from, and we now close in six. I also prepare the schedules for our external audit, and the auditors have proposed no adjustments two years in a row.

Before Lakeshore, three tax seasons at a small CPA firm taught me to work fast without losing accuracy, and to explain numbers to business owners who don't read balance sheets. I'd bring both habits to your team. Thank you for your time; I'd be glad to talk through how I'd approach your first close on NetSuite.

Sincerely,

Rachel Adeyemi

How to write an accountant cover letter

  1. 01

Lead with a process you improved

A shorter close, fewer reconciliation breaks, a clean audit. Give the before and after, because that's how finance managers measure accountants.

  2. 02

    Name your systems

NetSuite, QuickBooks, SAP, Tally or plain Excel: say which you've used for what. Finance teams hire for the system they run on.

  3. 03

Put your credential where it's seen

If you're a CPA, CMA or CA, or partway through the exams, say so in the first paragraph or the header, not at the end.

  4. 04

    Check every figure twice

A typo in a number is worse in an accountant's letter than anywhere else. Read the letter once just for numbers and names before you send it.

The letter, paragraph by paragraph

Opening: their project, your match

Rachel picks two details from the job post, the NetSuite move and the first bigger audit, and says she has already done both at a company of similar size. The reader learns in two sentences why she is applying and why she would be useful.

Middle: the close, before and after

Ten working days down to six is the center of the letter. She explains how (accruals and reconciliations moved into NetSuite, a shared checklist) so the controller can picture her doing the same on their team, and adds the scale of the books: a $90 million business.

The audit line

"No adjustments two years in a row" is the accountant's version of a sales number. It proves accuracy without using the word, and it speaks straight to the audit the company has coming up.

Earlier work as a second skill

The tax-season paragraph isn't a job history. It adds two traits: speed under deadline and explaining numbers to non-accountants. Pick earlier experience for what it adds, not just because it happened.

Close: offer to talk about their problem

Instead of "I look forward to hearing from you", she offers to discuss how she'd approach their first close on NetSuite. It's polite, specific and gives the interviewer a ready first question.

Accountant cover letter by experience level

Entry-level accountant

I graduated in May with a B.S. in Accounting and I'm applying for the Staff Accountant role at Corbel Partners. During my internship at a regional CPA firm I prepared bank reconciliations for 18 small-business clients in QuickBooks and drafted 40 individual tax returns under review. I've passed FAR and plan to finish the CPA exams within a year.

Accountant in India (Tally and GST)

I'm a B.Com graduate with three years as an accountant at a Surat textile trader, and I'm applying for the Senior Accountant role at Navbharat Polymers. I keep the books in Tally Prime for a ₹65 crore business, file monthly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B returns and reconcile input tax credit against GSTR-2B, which recovered ₹11 lakh of credit last year that had been missed.

Bookkeeper moving up

For four years I've done the full-cycle bookkeeping for a 25-person design studio, from payables and payroll to the year-end pack for our outside accountant. I'm applying for the Staff Accountant role at Fennick & Low to take on month-end close and reporting, and I'm studying for my CMA to back that up.

Accounting manager

I'm applying for the Accounting Manager role at Brookfield Outdoor. I lead a team of four that closes the books for three entities in two currencies, and last year we moved consolidation out of spreadsheets into our ERP, which cut the group close from 12 days to 7 and removed a recurring audit comment on intercompany balances.

Mistakes to avoid in an accountant cover letter

  • Listing duties

"Responsible for accounts payable, reconciliations and journal entries" describes the job, not you. Say what improved because you did it: fewer breaks, a faster close, a recovered amount.

  • A wrong number or name

Hiring managers forgive a lot, but not a misspelled company name or a figure that doesn't add up in an accountant's letter. Proofread numbers separately from words.

  • Jargon instead of results

A paragraph of GAAP, IFRS, accruals and deferrals tells the reader you know the vocabulary. One sentence about what you closed, filed or fixed tells them you can do the work.

  • Ignoring the company's situation

A growing company, a system change, a new audit or a new country all change what the finance team needs. If the job post hints at one, address it directly.

Key takeaways

  • Open with the detail from the job post that you've already handled before.
  • Give one process improvement with a before and after.
  • Prove accuracy with outcomes like clean audits, not adjectives.
  • Name the systems you used, inside the sentences about results.

Questions about accountant cover letters

Should I mention that I'm still sitting my CPA or CA exams?
Yes. Write it plainly, for example "I've passed three of the four CPA sections and sit the last in March." It shows progress and tells the employer when you'll be fully qualified.
How do I show accuracy in a cover letter?
With outcomes that depend on it: audits with no adjustments, reconciliations that tie out every month, tax returns filed with no notices. One sentence of proof says more than calling yourself detail-oriented.
What should an accountant with no experience write about?
Your degree, any internship or articleship, and one practical piece of work, like bookkeeping for a family business, a college society's accounts or a volunteer tax clinic. Say what you did and which software you used.
Should I list every accounting software I know?
No. Name the one or two the job post mentions, inside a sentence about what you did with them. The full list belongs in the skills section of your resume.
Should I include my salary expectations?
Only if the job post asks for them. If it does, give a range in one line near the end and keep the rest of the letter about the work.
How long should an accountant cover letter be?
Three or four short paragraphs, around 250 words. Finance managers read a lot of documents; a tight letter is a small sample of how you'd write a variance note.
