Cloud Engineer resume example

Cloud engineers design and run the accounts, networks and services a company's systems live on. Hiring managers look for the cloud you know best, migrations you've delivered, how you keep things secure and backed up, and what you did to the monthly bill. Certifications help, but only next to real work.

Why this resume works

  • Every bullet starts with a verb and ends with a result, most with a number.
  • The skills a cloud engineer job post asks for appear in the Skills section and again inside the bullets.
  • A single, standard layout (Tech) that applicant tracking systems read top to bottom.
  • Standard headings (Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills) so the ATS files each part correctly.

How to write a cloud engineer resume

  1. 01

    Lead with your main cloud

Most cloud engineers are strong on one platform and know a second. Say which is which in your title or first line, so an Azure team doesn't have to guess.

  2. 02

Describe migrations by size and safety

How many servers, databases or applications, over what time, and how the cut-overs went. A migration with no lost data and planned downtime windows is exactly what clients want to hear.

  3. 03

    Put a number on cost

Companies hire cloud engineers partly to control spend. A percentage cut to the monthly bill, and how you did it, is one of the strongest bullets you can have.

  4. 04

    Show security and recovery work

Access control, secrets, private networking, backups and tested disaster recovery separate a cloud engineer from someone who just creates VMs.

Cloud Engineer resume, section by section

Header and title

"Cloud Engineer (Azure and AWS)" puts her main platform first in the title. Phone, email, city and LinkedIn follow; a GitHub link is worth adding if you keep Terraform modules there.

Summary

Lavanya's summary gives her years in infrastructure and on cloud, the migration she's known for (120 VMs and 30 databases for a hospital group), what she runs day to day (landing zone, backup, monitoring, cost reviews for 18 subscriptions) and two certifications. That covers what a cloud hiring manager screens for.

Work experience

Each bullet answers a question a hiring manager has about cloud work: how big was the migration, how was the platform built, what happened to the bill, and does recovery actually work. Her sysadmin role shows where her foundation came from, with Microsoft 365 and PowerShell as bridges to the cloud.

Skills

Services are named per cloud, in brackets, so an ATS matches "Key Vault" or "Entra ID" directly. Automation and operations tools sit in a second group.

Certifications

Two current certifications with years. Cloud certifications expire or get replaced, so keep them up to date and remove entry-level ones once you've passed a higher level.

Education

A non-computing engineering degree is common in cloud roles and needs no explanation. One line with the university and years is enough.

Entry-level to senior cloud engineer resume bullet points

Associate cloud engineer (0–2 years)

  • Handled 40 cloud tickets a week for VMs, storage accounts and access requests across 6 client tenants.
  • Set up daily backups and restore tests for 90 Azure VMs.
  • Wrote PowerShell scripts that tag every new resource with its owner and cost center.
  • Passed AZ-104 in the first year and built a Terraform lab for practicing network changes.

Cloud engineer (3–6 years)

  • Migrated 45 applications from VMware to AWS EC2 and RDS, each with a tested rollback plan.
  • Wrote reusable Terraform modules for networks, VMs and databases used by 5 project teams.
  • Introduced budget alerts and monthly cost reviews, cutting idle spend by $25,000 a year.
  • Replaced public database endpoints with private links across 12 production workloads.

Senior / lead cloud engineer (7+ years)

  • Designed the multi-account AWS organization and guardrails for a 2,000-person company.
  • Led the exit from 2 data centers, moving 600 servers to Azure over 18 months.
  • Lead a cloud platform team of 6 and set the standards for tagging, access and networking.
  • Present cloud spend and risk to the CTO each quarter, with savings plans approved a year ahead.

Mistakes to avoid on a cloud engineer resume

  • Certifications instead of experience

Five badges and no projects make a reader wonder what you've built. Put real migrations and platforms first and certifications after them.

  • "Cloud" with no services named

"Worked on AWS" says very little. Name the services: EC2, VPC, IAM, RDS, AKS or Key Vault, so both the ATS and the hiring manager see your depth.

  • Ignoring cost

Cloud bills are a top concern for every company on the cloud. If you've never mentioned cost, add a bullet on any saving you made or any budget control you set up.

  • No mention of recovery

Backups that have never been tested are a risk. A line on restore tests or disaster-recovery drills shows you think about the bad day, not just the build.

Key takeaways

  • Name your main cloud first and list the services you've really used.
  • Describe migrations by size, timeline and how safely they went.
  • Show what you did to the monthly bill.
  • Include security, backup and tested recovery work.

Questions about cloud engineer resumes

How is a cloud engineer different from a DevOps engineer on a resume?
A cloud engineer resume centers on the platform: accounts, networks, identity, migrations, backup and cost. A DevOps resume centers on how software gets built and shipped: pipelines, release speed and reliability. Many people do both; lead with the side the job post stresses.
Which cloud certifications are worth listing?
Associate and professional-level certifications from AWS, Azure or Google Cloud are widely recognized, for example AZ-104, AZ-305 or AWS Solutions Architect. Entry-level ones like AZ-900 are fine early in your career; drop them once you hold a higher one.
Can I move from system administration into a cloud engineer role?
Yes, it's a common path. Highlight anything you've already moved to the cloud, like email to Microsoft 365, backups to Azure or a test environment on AWS, add a certification, and show scripting in PowerShell or Bash.
Should I list both Terraform and Bicep or CloudFormation?
List what you've used for real work. Terraform appears in many job posts because it works across clouds; the native tools matter for single-cloud teams. Put the one the job names first.
How do I describe client work at a managed services company?
Describe the client by industry and size, not name, such as "a 9-hospital group", and give the scale of what you built or moved for them. If you supported several clients, say how many.
