Python resume example: Python developer resume

Python is used for web backends, data pipelines, automation and machine learning, so a good Python resume has to say which kind of Python you write. Name your frameworks, show what your code runs in production, and put numbers on speed, reliability and the manual work it removed.

Why this resume works

  • Every bullet starts with a verb and ends with a result, most with a number.
  • The skills a Python developer job post asks for appear in the Skills section and again inside the bullets.
  • A single, standard layout (Compact Technical) that applicant tracking systems read top to bottom.
  • Standard headings (Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills) so the ATS files each part correctly.

How to write a Python developer resume

  1. 01

    Say which Python you write

A Django web developer, a data-pipeline engineer and an automation scripter all call themselves Python developers. Your title line and summary should make your kind obvious within a second.

  2. 02

Name the framework inside the bullet

"Built the loan API in FastAPI" puts the keyword where the recruiter is reading and proves you used it at work, not just in a tutorial.

  3. 03

    Measure what your code changed

Response times, job durations, test coverage and hours of manual work removed are all numbers you can check in your logs or your team's tracker.

  4. 04

    Link code worth reading

A GitHub link helps if it shows a maintained project with tests and a README. Pin your best two repositories and hide the half-finished ones.

Python Developer resume, section by section

Header with GitHub

Ryan's header has his phone, email, city, LinkedIn and GitHub. For Python roles the GitHub link gets opened often, so the pinned repositories should be ones you would happily walk an interviewer through.

Summary

It names his years, his frameworks (Django and FastAPI), the product and its scale (40,000 loan applications a month) and what he's good at: typed, tested code, schema design and moving slow jobs to queues. That tells a hiring manager he is a backend Python developer, not a data scientist.

Work experience

Each bullet pairs a Python tool with a measurable change: FastAPI with response time, Celery with approval time, pytest with coverage, Django with page speed. The earlier role shows the same pattern at a smaller scale, which makes the step up to senior easy to follow.

Skills

Two groups: the Python libraries and frameworks, then databases and infrastructure. Version numbers appear only where they matter (Python 3.12). Everything listed shows up again in a bullet or project, so nothing looks padded.

Projects

One open-source library with stars and outside contributors does more than five tutorial projects. If you maintain something people use, give it its own line with the link and a usage number.

Education

One line with degree, college and years. After a few years of work, the degree matters far less than the services you have built, so it sits at the bottom.

Entry-level to senior Python developer resume bullet points

Junior Python developer (0–2 years)

  • Built 9 REST endpoints in Django REST Framework for the customer app, each with pytest tests.
  • Wrote a Python script that reconciles daily payment files, replacing 2 hours of manual checks.
  • Fixed 45 bugs from the support queue in the first 6 months, most within the same sprint.
  • Added logging and Sentry alerts to 3 background jobs that used to fail silently.

Python developer (3–5 years)

  • Own the notifications service in FastAPI, sending 1.2 million SMS and emails a month.
  • Moved 4 reporting jobs from cron to Celery with retries, ending missed morning reports.
  • Cut the main API's p95 response time from 900 ms to 220 ms with query tuning and Redis caching.
  • Review pull requests for 3 junior developers and wrote the team's Python style guide.

Senior / lead Python engineer (6+ years)

  • Split a 200,000-line Django monolith into 5 services over 18 months with no customer-facing downtime.
  • Set the team's standards for typing, testing and async code, adopted by 4 squads.
  • Led the move from Python 3.8 to 3.12, which reduced compute cost on the busiest service by 20%.
  • Hire and mentor backend engineers; 3 people I mentored have been promoted.

Mistakes to avoid on a Python developer resume

  • A skills list of every library

NumPy, TensorFlow, Django, Selenium, Kivy and PyQt on one line tells a reader you've touched everything and mastered nothing. Keep the tools that match the job and that you could be interviewed on.

  • Hiding the framework

"Developed backend features" could be any language. Say Django, FastAPI or Flask in the bullet so both the ATS and the reader see it.

  • Scripts with no outcome

"Wrote automation scripts" is a task. "Wrote a script that saves finance 3 days a month" is a reason to hire you.

  • Tutorial projects as portfolio

To-do apps and Titanic notebooks are on thousands of resumes. One project that solves a real problem, with tests and a few users, stands out more than five copies.

Key takeaways

  • State which kind of Python work you do in the title and summary.
  • Name Django, FastAPI or Flask inside the bullets, not only in skills.
  • Measure response times, job durations, coverage and hours saved.
  • Link one or two maintained repositories, not a pile of tutorials.

Questions about Python developer resumes

What should a Python resume include?
The kind of Python you write (web backends, data pipelines, automation or machine learning), your frameworks such as Django, FastAPI or pandas, the databases and cloud services your code runs on, and results with numbers: response times, data volumes, hours of manual work removed. Link your GitHub if it shows real projects.
Should I list Python 2 experience?
Only as part of a migration story, like "moved 30,000 lines from Python 2.7 to 3.10". On its own it suggests old code; as a migration it shows you can handle legacy work safely.
Django or FastAPI: which should I put first?
Whichever the job post names. If it names neither, lead with the one you've used most in production and list the other after it.
Do I need data science skills to get a Python developer job?
No. Most Python developer roles are backend or automation work. Add pandas or NumPy only if you have used them, and apply to data roles with a separate resume.
How do I show Python skills with no work experience?
Two or three projects with a live link and the code: a small web app with login and a database, an API with tests, or a script that automates something real. Add your internship and your degree, and keep the skills list to what you have actually built with.
Are Python certifications worth adding?
They rarely decide a backend hire, but they don't hurt. One line for a PCAP or PCPP certificate or a cloud certification is enough; projects and work results carry far more weight.
