Scrum Master resume example

A scrum master is judged by how well teams deliver, not by how many ceremonies they run. Hiring managers want to see the teams you've coached, what changed in their delivery (predictability, cycle time, fewer carry-overs), the blockers you removed, and how you helped people work together without being their manager.

Why this resume works

  • Every bullet starts with a verb and ends with a result, most with a number.
  • The skills a Scrum master job post asks for appear in the Skills section and again inside the bullets.
  • A single, standard layout (Modern Professional) that applicant tracking systems read top to bottom.
  • Standard headings (Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills) so the ATS files each part correctly.

How to write a Scrum master resume

  1. 01

Show what changed for the team

Sprint goals met, cycle time, carry-over, release frequency, team health. Pick two or three you can measure and show the before and after.

  2. 02

Say how many teams and people

"3 teams, 22 people" and "9-team release train" tell a hiring manager your scale. Coaching one team is a different job from coordinating nine.

  3. 03

    Go beyond the ceremonies

Every scrum master runs stand-ups and retrospectives. Your resume should show what came of them: blockers cleared, actions closed, better flow.

  4. 04

    Use your certification wisely

PSM, CSM or SAFe certifications help you pass the first screen. Put them in your title line or summary, then let your results carry the rest.

Scrum Master resume, section by section

Header with certifications

Amelia puts "PSM II, SAFe" in her title line, because recruiters for scrum master roles often filter on certification first. Phone, email, city and LinkedIn follow.

Summary

Her summary names the industries, how many teams and people she serves, three results (sprint goals, cycle time, PI planning) and her certifications. It shows she works at team and program level.

Work experience

Each bullet ties a practice to a measurable change: smaller stories and WIP limits to cycle time, a blocker log to faster unblocking. Her earlier role shows her moving from coordinator to scrum master, a common and credible path.

Skills

Agile practices and tools are separate. Coaching, facilitation and conflict resolution are listed as skills, and her bullets give the evidence for each.

Certifications

Both certifications appear with years. If you hold several, list the highest level from each body and leave out the entry-level ones you've since passed beyond.

Education

One line is enough. Scrum masters come from many backgrounds, so the degree subject matters much less than team results.

Entry-level to senior Scrum master resume bullet points

New scrum master (0–2 years)

  • Run all Scrum events for one team of 8, keeping stand-ups to 15 minutes.
  • Set up the team's Jira board, workflow and sprint reports from scratch.
  • Track retrospective actions and close 85% of them within two sprints.
  • Shield the team from mid-sprint requests by routing them through the product owner.

Scrum master (3–6 years)

  • Serve 2 to 3 teams at once, adapting practices to each team's maturity.
  • Introduced flow metrics and a cumulative flow chart to spot bottlenecks early.
  • Coached a team through moving from Scrum to Kanban for support work, cutting response time by half.
  • Run a monthly scrum master community of practice for 12 colleagues.

Release train engineer / agile coach (7+ years)

  • Lead PI planning and the release train sync for 11 teams and 95 people.
  • Coached senior leaders on moving from project funding to funding long-lived teams.
  • Designed the scrum master and product owner training used across the IT department.
  • Report program predictability to leadership each quarter, with risks and dependencies.

Mistakes to avoid on a Scrum master resume

  • Listing ceremonies as achievements

"Facilitated daily stand-ups and sprint reviews" describes the job description. Show what improved because of how you ran them.

  • Taking credit for the team's work

"Delivered the claims app" overstates the role. "Helped the team cut cycle time while delivering the claims app" is honest and still strong.

  • No numbers at all

Agile teams are full of data: sprint goals, cycle time, carry-over, release frequency. Leaving them out makes your impact hard to judge.

  • Buzzword summaries

"Passionate agile evangelist and servant leader" says nothing specific. Name your teams, industries and results instead.

Key takeaways

  • Show what changed in team delivery, with before-and-after numbers.
  • Give the number of teams and people you serve.
  • Describe outcomes of ceremonies, not the ceremonies themselves.
  • Put your certification in the title line or summary.

Questions about Scrum master resumes

Is velocity a good metric to put on a scrum master resume?
Use it carefully. Velocity rising can mean bigger estimates rather than more work done. Predictability (sprint goals met), cycle time and fewer carry-overs are usually more convincing.
Can I become a scrum master without IT experience?
Yes, but you'll need to show facilitation and team coordination from another field, plus a certification like PSM I or CSM. Experience as a business analyst, tester or project coordinator on a software team makes the move much easier.
Should I write "servant leader" on my resume?
Show it instead. Bullets about removing blockers, coaching product owners and helping a team take over its own process prove the idea far better than the phrase.
PSM or CSM: which certification is better?
Both are widely recognized. PSM is earned by passing an assessment; CSM comes with a required course. List whichever you hold; employers rarely prefer one strongly over the other.
How is a scrum master resume different from a project manager resume?
A project manager resume shows scope, budget and deadlines delivered. A scrum master resume shows how teams improved the way they work and deliver, without directing the work. If you've done both, keep the bullets for each role true to that role.
